2008/1/28 Looking for Summer InternshipsI just got back from my Superday with CMB (Asia). The interviews were held at UK. Apparently, all of the interviews ran late (they must really loved the other candidates). Since I was the last person to be interviewed, the VP and the MD were exhausted. I don't think I would get an offer from their attitude. I didn't get any technical questions (altough I did prepare for them). The first interview was scheduled for 3pm but didn't start till like 3:40 or later (I didn't have my cell, so didn't know the exact time). The interview went pretty fast, she asked for my experience ans such then went straight to ask me if I had any questions. I asked her about her own experience. She probably spent more time talking about her own experience than asking me questions. She didn't drag notes on my resume either (don't know if its a good thing or not). At last, I forgot to ask her for her business card. My second interviw was with the MD. First thing he said was that he's exhausted and lets get it over with (I'm the last candidate of the day). Once again, pretty lay back questions, talked about myself, my life experience (less about work), why IB and why Asia. Then, he talked about his own experience (I didn't ask yet) for a good while. After that, he gave me advices on how I should look at opportunities in all different fields and different countries. Basically saying that I should just look into Asia IB. So, I guess that wasn't good either. BTW, he didn't drag down any notes. The HR said the decision would be made around mid Feb, but I think I am pretty much out of hte pictures. As for the competitive level, they are interviewing oversea (NYC 20+ people, UK 15+, and Aisa region probably more). Not sure how many offers would be given, but it is pretty competitive for sure. In an hour - Phone Interview with Deutsche Bank! 2008/1/26 Warwick Castle and StratfordToday I went on a trip with the Arcadia kids. The trip cost 10 pound which is such a good deal considering transportation, admission to the castle, adn visiting two historical towns.
I woke up at 7:30 and meet up with all the Queen Mary kids at 8:15 to go to the trip. We got to the bus location at 9 (also paid for the stonehenge trip.. so excited). Anyway, slept on the bus for around 2 hour, got to the destination #1 - Warwick Castle around 11 am.
Warkwick Castle is one of the biggest and most celebrated medieval style castle built around 1264. The castle itself is a rampart not really a castle (according to wiki). Regardless, it was still really gorgeous. There were party rooms, knight rooms, ghost towers, gates, rivers, and bedrooms.. very grandeous.
We spent around an hour and a half at the castle, then we moved on to destination #2 - Stratford, the birthplace of Shakespear.
Since we haven't eat breakfast, the first thing we did when we got there was eat. We were unable to find a authentic fish and chip restaurant, so we ended up going to a Chinese restaurant.. (hehe.. odd right..)... Anyway, the food was really good although it did cost 10 pound.
After that, we walked around the area, took picture with swan, visited Shakespeare's birthplace, burial site, Anne Hatteway's (spelled wrong) cottage (the walk took 20 minute and we ended up not going in cuz it was 6 pounds). Overall, the town is very traditional looking and its quite a nice trip.
Now I am exhausted big time!
London Night LifeWith the drinking age at 18, London's night life is defintely wicked for college students.
Thursday night is a big night for students as most clubs/bars have major discounts for students.
Ever since I been here, I have been going out at least twice a week, and the area for partying is no other than London's soho district - tons of clubs and bars, great night life.
I haven't taken pictures while out cuz I don't want to lose my camera, so I stole other ppl's pic. hehe..
2008/1/20 Oxford 一日游 Trip to Oxford, UK.
The trip is really not that well planned. We just know that we are going there.. and that's it. The only thing I know about Oxford is the famous Oxford University which I found out is made up of 39 individual colleges. The area I went are filled with these colleges, buildings, and churches. Very nice old place.. makes me cheerish the history....
I didn't sleep the night before because I was reading the book - "Snow Flow and the Secret Fan" (really good book by the way).. so slept on the 1.5 hour bus ride. Since we have no tour guide and such, we just wonder the street and visit all these gorgeous places. (this also explains why I have no idea what each of the building are.. [face turning read] )..
Enjoy the pic, and you should definitely visit there when you get a chance.. and make sure get to go on a tour as they could explain the actual history and story behind these great architectures.
2008/1/11 QMUL and Flat 14Finally moved in to campus.. My dorm is Richard Feilden Flat 14J.. a single room.. tiny but adequate... its pretty sweet...
Haven't taken any picture of the school itself.. but certainly will..
As far as classes go, it was a really complicated process.. I got two of the classes I applied for... the ones I didn't get, I had to go to each department and get approval.. so.. after that process... my schedule was as follows --> Futures and Options, Biology, International Relation, and Innovation and Entreprenuership...
The first day of class went really well, met some really cool and nice ppl.. one thing really interesting is that over 50% of the classmates are middle easterners... and the rest are all around Europe.. London is quite diverse itself..
The second day of class whereas I suppose to take Biology, but then I discovered that the class doesn't even exist.. *_*.... so had to go with plan B... ended up switching my schedule big time... dropped Biology and IR.. ending up taking International Business and Company Law (both of which I missed the first class due to changing my schedule and such.. sigh)... Regardless.. the good news is that everything is solved now.. and I have Thurs and Fri free.. horray for four day weekend!!! YAY!!!..
Partying London Style
For those who don't know.. London's legal driniking age is 18.. so ye.. I had my first Legal drink in London it was Captain Morgan on Red Bull (sadly I forgot to take a pic).. lol.. drinks here (discounted student ones) are cheaper than the ones sold in Hoboken... Beer are 1 pound.. and yes.. I am drinking beer (strongbow is actually quite tasty and doesn't taste like beer beer)...
There are a lot clubs and bars in London... and ppl living in my flat are pretty much party animals.. so we pretty much drink every night... Last night we went to onANon.. a bar/club in London.. 3 floors.. pretty awesome.. I was quite wasted.. so didn't really had much fun in the last hour or so.. but overall.. it was cool.. and like my flatmate said... there's always drama at onANon.. and indeed drama did occur..
Overall.. London is so far so good.. I am sure my semester here would be interesting.. and I am glad to become a part of Flat 14...
ok.. now Im gonna go upload some pics...
2008/1/3 London~~Dec 30, 2007 - Going to Airport
Got up around 12pm.. took shower.. ate breakfast.. did some final checks and such... My dad is driving me to the airport along with my brother, my cousins, and my grandma... we had to squeeze in the back seat.. but it was sweet for them to come.. so it was a good start to the trip..
We started driving to the JFK at 2:45.. the plane is departing on 6:10pm.. the airline suggested that i get there at least 3 hours before.. and the final deadline is 5pm, an hour before the departure.. since I checked in online.. I thought I had enough time as long as I could get to the airport by 4:30pm..
As the GPS pointed out.. we head toward the Holland Tunnel direction.. however.. there was a huge traffic starting from about 5 miles before the actual tunnel... so we had to go with the detour.. as a result, we took the other way.. staten island bridge.. there was some traffic but wasn't too bad..
We arrived at the aiport around 4pm.. perfect timing.. lucked out... so next time.. I might actually have to leave earlier.. after dropping my stuff off.. our gang ate at McDonalds.. (umm.. yum.. o_O.. lol..).. since i have to go through the gates by 5pm... I had to say my goodbyes to my family... I almost cried.. but they didn't realized.. tears were forming but i held it in.. I miss them already... its the first time I am like 3,000 miles away from home...
Dec 30/31 - Ride to London and the Hostel...
As explained by the plane captial.. the wind was in favor of the flight.. so the schedule 6.5 hour flight would only take 5.5 hour.. However.. since Heathrow is one of the busiest airport in the world, they won't be able to let us land before the schedule landing time.. so all the passengers pretty much chilled on the plane for over an 1.5 hour before the actual departure..
The entertainment system on the plane is quite adequate.. there are tons of movies.. games.. and such... so the flight was not that bad.. I didn't sleep.. read an ebook.. watched 1.95 of movie (.05 missing because the entertainment system had to be shut off before landing... so I didnt not finish the last few minutes of movie - Knocked Up)
I got off the plane at around 6:05am London time (1:05 am NY/NJ time)... had to go through the immigration to get in... I had originally applied for a student visa so I could do some part time work in London... However, as the immigration officer pointed out... The visa does not start till 1/1/08.. and I arrived on 12/31/07.. so they couldn't stamped in.. they could only do the regular visitor thing... she advised that I take a day trip to Paris and then re-check in.. yucky.. what a pain.. Luckily I called the immigration center immediately follow and found out that the visa is still effective even though it is not stamped.. whooo.... it scared me a bit..
Called my parents and told them I am save.. I was suprised that they were able to return my call on my cell... it suprisingly worked without me putting anything on it...
I took the Underground Tube (subway/train) from Heathrow to King's Cross where my hostel is... (shit.. I just realized i didn't take any pic of the place I stayed at.. yucky... ).. anyway.. I arrived around 10 am... was not able to check in till 2:30pm.. sux.. but the good thing is I could drop my huge bags there.. they were so heavy.. with that.. I walk around the local area and explored a little...
Once I checked in to the hotel.. I tooked a 2 to 3 hour nap.. then went ahead to London Eye.. I got to London eye at around 6pm.. there were not many people waiting there yet as in Time Square.. the place would've been filled.. but it didnt slowly get jammed up as hours approach.. it was reported that 700,000 people were there to watch the London eye... Overall I waited 6 hours for the actual firework.. and it was gorgeous.. definitely worth wait.. I also met some nice people and famly there.. we were all very excited... now its 2 cities down.. more to go.. hehe.. and my battery died after all these pictures and videos...
Getting back to the hostel was chaotic... crazy... lots of roads and tube stations were closed.. they were tons of people.. I could barely move a step... I pretty much walk back the the hostel.... Since I haven't slept for over 30 hours... I passed out for the next whole day.. hehe..
Jan 1st - sleeping...
Jan 2nd - Visited the British Musem.. it was pretty awesome.. and Free!!!! .. was not able to take picture because camera is dead..
Everything around the King's cross area were ridiculously expensive.. double the price in NYC.. soda cost 2 pound... yucky... I spent $200 dollar in these 3 days... ($100 on hostel..).. the rest on food and tube.. Tube cost $8.00 (4 pound) each trip.. what a rip off... Now.. I much prefer the NYC $2.00 subway..
Jan 3rd
I didn't sleep much the night.. couldn't fall to sleep... went online for hours from 2am-4am.. the staff at the Hostel was weirded out.. lol...
Got to QM around 10:30am.. gosh.. all the luggages up and down the tube station was crazy.. such a work out..
I am living in a single room in a flat.. the room is prety small but reallly cozy.. havent meet that many people yet as full time students are not back yet.. and the study abroad students are exhausted and probably taking naps here and there...
Tomorrow would mark a new day... yay.. London!!! Let me adventure start!!!...
Video - my 2 second on ABC newsI am finally able to get the video up on youtube.. so I could link it now..
Here it is .. me in my pink shirt green sweat pant and being an "extra" in ABC's interview for Stevens Career Development... We are ranked top 20 in the country.. pretty sweet...
